Nursing licensure in Alabama is overseen by the Alabama Board of Nursing, which operates as a standalone state agency rather than sitting under a larger health or consumer-affairs department. The largest concentration of nursing jobs is around Birmingham, home to the UAB Health System and its major academic medical center, with additional hubs in Huntsville, Montgomery, and the Gulf Coast city of Mobile. Alabama joined the multistate Nurse Licensure Compact effective January 1, 2020, so eligible resident nurses can hold a single license valid across every compact state.

How to register for the NCLEX in Alabama

- 2. Register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee.
- 3. Once the board finds you eligible, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and schedule at a Pearson VUE test center.

License renewal & continuing education in Alabama

- The Alabama Board of Nursing requires 24 contact hours of Board-approved or Board-recognized continuing education for each two-year renewal of an active-status license.
- LPN/LVN continuing education
- Licensed practical nurses meet the same 24-contact-hour requirement each two-year renewal cycle.
The 24-hour total is prorated for nurses licensed partway through a cycle, and newly licensed nurses must also complete a four-contact-hour Board-provided mandatory course covering the Nurse Practice Act, board functions, and professional conduct.

Yes. Alabama is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact and began issuing multistate licenses effective January 1, 2020. Eligible nurses whose primary residence is Alabama can hold one multistate license valid for practice in all compact states.
The Alabama Board of Nursing regulates registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and advanced practice nurses in the state. It is a standalone agency, not part of a larger department.
First apply for licensure with the Alabama Board of Nursing. Once the board finds you eligible, register for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN through Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee. You then receive an Authorization to Test and schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE test center. The NCLEX itself is developed by the NCSBN.
Alabama participates in the Nursys database, so RN and LPN licenses can be verified for free at nursys.com, which draws its data directly from the Alabama Board of Nursing.
