NCLEX practice questions for Alaska nurses & students
Alaska's nurses are licensed by the Alaska Board of Nursing, administered through the state's Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing in the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. Because so much of the state is roadless and rural, Alaska leans heavily on nurses in community and tribal health settings — the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage anchors a statewide tribal health system, and Providence Alaska Medical Center is the largest hospital in the state. Alaska is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses moving to or from the state must obtain an Alaska-specific license by endorsement.

Nursing licensure in Alaska is set by the Alaska Board of Nursing, within Alaska's Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development). For official, current requirements, use the board directly.
How to register for the NCLEX in Alaska
- 1. Apply for licensure by examination with the Alaska Board of Nursing and meet its eligibility requirements.
- 2. Register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee.
- 3. Once the board finds you eligible, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and schedule at a Pearson VUE test center.

License renewal & continuing education in Alaska

- Alaska requires nurses to document continuing competency each biennial renewal by completing two of three activities: 30 contact hours of continuing education in nursing, 30 hours of professional nursing activities, or 320 hours of compensated nursing employment (a Board-approved refresher course or qualifying academic credits are additional alternatives).
Continuing education is only one of several ways to satisfy the continuing-competency requirement under 12 AAC 44.600; nurses first licensed within the prior year are exempt for that first renewal only.

No. Alaska is not currently a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. Legislation to join has been introduced but has not been enacted, so a nurse must hold an Alaska-issued license to practice in the state.
