NCLEX practice questions for New York nurses & students
New York regulates nursing differently from most states: rather than a stand-alone board of nursing, licensure runs through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which administers the State Board for Nursing. New York is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact — compact bills have been introduced repeatedly but have not been enacted — so nurses need a New York license, by examination or endorsement, to practice in the state. New York hosts some of the country's most prominent nursing schools, from NYU and Columbia in New York City to research programs upstate.

Nursing licensure in New York is set by the New York State Board of Nursing, New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions (State Board for Nursing). For official, current requirements, use the board directly.
How to register for the NCLEX in New York
- 1. Apply for licensure by examination with the New York State Board of Nursing and meet its eligibility requirements.
- 2. Register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee.
- 3. Once the board finds you eligible, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and schedule at a Pearson VUE test center.

New York regulates nursing through the State Education Department’s Office of the Professions and does not impose a set contact-hour continuing-education total for RN renewal; the mandatory items are periodic infection-control coursework and one-time child-abuse-reporting coursework. Exemptions and any updated coursework deadlines should be confirmed with the Office of the Professions.

No. New York has not enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact. Compact legislation has been introduced in the State Legislature but has not passed, so a nurse must hold a New York license to practice in the state even with a multistate license from elsewhere.
Nursing is regulated by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions, which oversees the State Board for Nursing — New York does not use a separate stand-alone board of nursing for licensure administration.
You apply for licensure through the NYS Office of the Professions and, once found eligible, register for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN through Pearson VUE.
