Minnesota regulates nursing through the Minnesota Board of Nursing, an independent state board that licenses RNs and LPNs and approves nursing programs. Minnesota is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state: it issues single-state licenses, and a nurse licensed elsewhere applies to Minnesota by endorsement. The state's flagship program is the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, the oldest continuously operating university-based nursing school in the United States.

How to register for the NCLEX in Minnesota
- 1. Apply for licensure by examination with the Minnesota Board of Nursing and meet its eligibility requirements.
- 2. Register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee.
- 3. Once the board finds you eligible, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and schedule at a Pearson VUE test center.

License renewal & continuing education in Minnesota
- License renewal
- Every two years (biennial), with the expiration tied to the licensee’s birth month.
- RN continuing education
- 24 contact hours of continuing education during each 24-month registration period (one contact hour for each month of registration; the ratio scales for shorter or longer periods).
- LPN/LVN continuing education
- 12 contact hours of continuing education during each 24-month registration period.
Do not submit CE documentation with the renewal unless selected for an audit; keep records for two years after using them for renewal.
