NCLEX practice questions for California nurses & students
California regulates its registered nurses through the California Board of Registered Nursing, part of the state Department of Consumer Affairs, with a separate Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians handling LVNs. It is the largest nursing workforce in the country, spread across major systems such as Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Cedars-Sinai, and the University of California academic medical centers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Davis, and Irvine. California is the largest state that has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses must hold a California-issued license to practice in the state — there is no multistate reciprocity.

Nursing licensure in California is set by the California Board of Registered Nursing, within the California Department of Consumer Affairs. For official, current requirements, use the board directly.
How to register for the NCLEX in California
- 1. Apply for licensure by examination with the California Board of Registered Nursing and meet its eligibility requirements.
- 2. Register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee.
- 3. Once the board finds you eligible, you receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) and schedule at a Pearson VUE test center.

License renewal & continuing education in California

- The California Board of Registered Nursing requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years to renew an active RN license.

RNs renewing for the first time within two years of initial licensure are exempt from the 30 hours but must still complete a one-hour Board-approved implicit-bias course (AB 1407, effective January 1, 2023).

California nursing & NCLEX — frequently asked
No. California is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact and is the largest non-compact state. A nurse must hold a California-issued license to practice in California; a multistate compact license does not cover practice in the state.
The California Board of Registered Nursing, within the Department of Consumer Affairs, regulates registered nurses. Licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) are regulated separately by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
Apply for licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing (or the Board of Vocational Nursing for LVNs), then register for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee. Once the board makes you eligible you receive an Authorization to Test and schedule at a Pearson VUE center. The NCLEX is developed by the NCSBN.
Use the California Department of Consumer Affairs license search at search.dca.ca.gov, which covers both RN and LVN licenses. California does not verify RN licenses through Nursys.
